I didn't start my fitness journey in sports, like many trainers do. In fact, I wasn't much into fitness until my mid-20's. At some point during my 20's, I started experiencing debilitating back pain, so awful I would lay awake crying in pain every night. After many doctor appointments, buying expensive beds, sleeping on the floor, and lots of pain medicine, I was told there was nothing wrong with my back and I should just find a comfortable position to sleep in.
I was furious! It's as if I hadn't already thought of that! That is when I turned to strength training. I hadn't done much lifting at all before then, but I had this idea that if I just got stronger, it would help my pain. I focused on resistance training and core work and I saw results within the first week! I was sold on strength training and have kept at it ever since. I am now living back-pain free for many years.
Throughout my fitness journey, there was much trial and error and lots of experimenting. With so much information out there on different fitness routines, I was left confused on what information to trust. When I began my journey, I was what many call "skinny fat;" I have always had a hard time gaining weight and muscle. It took a lot of patience, time, and experimenting to find what works for my body but I eventually I was able to start adding on muscle and seeing my body composition change!
I have been on the other side of the coin, too, though! When I got pregnant with my son, I gained 50 pounds. My back pain returned, I felt awful in my own skin, and I had a hard time accepting my new body. Since I have always struggled to gain weight, going through the struggle to lose it was new to me! And boy was it hard! It took over a year to lose all the weight I had gained from pregnancy, but I trusted the process and am now loving the skin I am in!
I understand how overwhelming it is to live in a body that you're constantly looking in the mirror and criticizing. I know what it's like to read through loads of articles, videos, and information on how to workout, what foods to eat, what type of stretching to do, etc. and be overwhelmed by what you're looking at.
